Explore the Beautiful Town of Avignon

Enjoy a scenic drive along the Rhône River as you reach the magnificent city of Avignon, known as the City of the Popes. Your guide will lead you on a walking tour to discover the iconic landmarks of Avignon. Climb to the top, of the hill to see  the panoramic views of the Rhône river. Immerse yourself in the rich history of Avignon, which became the seat of the papacy in the early 14th century.

Visit the Pope’s Palace

Visit the Palace and Gardens of the Popes, the largest gothic palace in the world. With your entrance ticket (you can purchase it as an extra during the booking process), you’ll have access to a Histopad, an augmented reality and 3-D technology device that enhances your experience. Explore nine major rooms of the palace in their original 14th-century splendor, with detailed explanations provided in your chosen language.

Step back in time. Then stroll through Avignon and learn more about its history enjoy free time. You can choose to have lunch in Avignon or ask your guide for recommendations to have lunch in the charming hilltop village of Gordes.

Discover Gordes and Senanque Abbey

After lunch, continue your journey to the enchanting village of Gordes, renowned as one of the Most Beautiful Villages* in France. Nestled against the backdrop of the Luberon mountain range, Gordes beckons with its narrow paved streets and timeless charm. Take in the beauty of the village, especially during the less crowded seasons of spring and autumn. Then, make a photo stop at the Cistercian Abbey of Senanque, surrounded by magnificent lavender fields in July.

Experience Roussillon and the Ochre Trail

Your excursion from Aix-en-Provence continues to the villages of Lourmarin and Roussillon. Roussillon will enchant you with its unique setting atop the Provencal Colorado, a rock formation that offers stunning views. Take time to wander through the village or walk along the famous Ochre Trail, a picturesque 30-minute walk through the former Ochre Quarry. Admire the vibrant colors created by the natural ochre pigments mixed with the cliffs’ sand, ranging from bright yellow to violet.

Discover Lourmarin, the Artist’s Village

Next we head to the village of Lourmarin, known as an artist’s village. Surrounded by olive and almond trees, Lourmarin has attracted numerous artists and writers, including Henri Bosco and Albert Camus. Enjoy the charming village and consider visiting its ancient castle, a source of inspiration for Peter Mayle’s book, A Year in Provence.
