Holland 2013 Tulip Festival

March 21-May 20

TulipsThe best date for the flower blooms depends upon what Mother Nature has in store!  There are years when March paints an amazing display of reds, oranges, and yellows whereas there are years when the bulbs peak at the end of April when winter temperatures are prolonged.

If you miss tulip time, you’ll not miss out on colors because hyacinths and narcissi will be a sensory experience for you both for your nose and eyes!

There are a number of places where the bulbs grow but in North Holland, the most well-known spots can be found between the towns of Haarlem and Sassenheim. Also, there are wonderful fields just north of Leiden in South Holland, including the village of Lisse where the Keukenhof Gardens are located.

Keukenhof is the ultimate gardens to see the tulips where more than 7 million bulbs have been planted ---tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths.

April, in particular, is a colorful month to be in Amsterdam (and all of Holland) when rows and rows of tulips in every color imaginable blanket the countryside.

On April 30th, the Dutch celebrate Queen’s Day (Koninginnedag), the birthday of Juliana who was Queen Beatrix’s mother. This is a national holiday in the Netherlands.
