The history of the wines here is hand in hand with the history of the popes who relocated the papacy to the city of Avignon in 1308. During the seventy years that the popes lived in the area, they promoted the production and reputation of the wine. On this tour, you will taste one white, one young red, and one older red.
Next stop will be Avignon to see the famous Pont d'Avignon (also called the Benezet Bridge) that has withstood the torrents of the Rhone River. In Avignon, you will walk along the ramparts of the walled city and arrive at the Cathedral Notre Dame des Doms and the Popes Palace (optional visits).
The tour will continue to the famous Pont du Gard, the largest Roman aqueduct in existence and constructed in the 1st century AD.
Returning to Aix, you will pass by the town of Tarascon. Its castle is from the 14th century and faces Beaucaire Castle which is directly across the Rhone River. It's impressive to see these two towns in such proximity, each with its own castle!
