Castelnaud is a medieval castle in the Dordogne Valley. It is perched high above the Dordogne River and faces Chateaux Beynac and Marqueyssac as well as the medieval village of La Roque Gageac.

Castelnaud Castle is privately owned and features the art of warfare during the Middle Ages with a private collection of furniture, arms and armor, and a reconstruction of catapults.

Milandes Castle in the DordogneNext stop will be the Milandes Castle, a much smaller chateau than Castelnaud. It was rented in 1940 by the American entertainer Josephine Baker and bought by her in 1947. As a cabaret entertainer, she redecorated the interior with an art deco style. Josephine Baker was awarded the French Legion of Honor because of heroic work with the French Resistance during WWII.

The final stop of your Dordogne Castles Tour will be Marqueyssac Castle and gardens. This privately owned castle was built by Bertrand Vernet de Marqueyssac who was Counselor to King Louis XIV. The present owner has restored the gardens and they are primarily clipped boxwoods. Pruning more than 150,000 boxwoods into a variety of shapes and sizes results in a serene landscape. The views surrounding the castle towards Castelnaud Castle and Fayrac Chateau are very special, too.

Your Dordogne Castles tour to Castelnaud, Milandes, and Marqueyssac will conclude with a return to Sarlat.
