Alkmaar, Hoorn, Zaanse Schans, Volendam Private Tour AHT

Alkmaar Cheese Market

Take a full day private tour from Amsterdam to visit Alkmaar and Hoorn in the morning and then enjoy Zaanse Schans and Volendam in the afternoon.

Beginning with a hotel pickup in Amsterdam with your private driver guide, you will visit the famous cheese market in Alkmaar (only possible on Friday).

After the market, you will enjoy sightseeing in Alkmaar and Hoorn.

Friday's cheese markets is very famous! Alkmaar's cheese market is held at the Waagplein and is one of the country's most popular tourist attractions. From April through September, Friday is market morning. After the old-fashioned way of the hand clap, traders and carriers will weigh the cheeses. It isn't possible to buy cheese at the market itself since it is to demonstrate how this merchants' market operated year ago.  However, the market is surrounded by many specialized stalls where it is possible to buy all kinds of cheese (and non-cheese) related products.

Alkmaar, HollandAlkmaar has many medieval buildings that are still intact and the most famous is the tall tower of the Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk, where many people from Alkmaar often get married.

In nearby Hoorn, monumental facades tell of the history of this former Dutch East India Company town. Much of the original street layout has remained intact and the town has at preserved some 300 monuments.

If you wish just a half day tour, you could return to Amsterdam.

Zaanse SchansHowever, to make the full day tour, you'd continue to Zaanse Schans. In Zaanse Schans, you will get a vivid impression of the Dutch way of life in the 17th and 18th centuries. The area consists of authentic houses, an historic shipyard, a pewter factory, a cheese and dairy farm, an age-old grocery store, clog-making demonstrations, and above all, many windmills.

Volendam will be the final visit in this full day tour. In this town, you will see a Dutch fishing village and a town with very historic charm in its wooden houses and with locals wearing their colorful style of dress.
